We aim to understand the mechanisms by which inorganic materials interact with biological systems in the context of biomaterials science and biomineralization. We are particularly interested on (i) the behavior of bio(macro)molecules at interfaces, including lipids, peptides and proteins, (ii) their bioactivity (e.g. catalytic properties), and (iii) their ability to control mineralization processes.
Through the combination of in situ and ex situ characterizations, performed by means of surface science techniques, we explore a variety of bio-organic/inorganic interfaces and probe events at the nanoscale.
Considering these aspects is essential in order to make progress in deciphering interfacial mechanisms in complex systems (e.g. hard biomineralized materials) and designing new biomimetic systems with tailored properties and functions.
